Technical assistance for the development of Environmental Product Declarations

Identified need

The growing demand for reliable, comparable and verifiable environmental information makes EPDs a key tool for communicating the environmental performance of products to customers and other stakeholders across the value chain.

In the electrical and electronic sector, the PEP ecopassport programme is one of the main reference frameworks for this type of declaration. The periodic updating of its Product Category Rules (PCR) and Product Specific Rules (PSR) requires both the methodological criteria applied and the tools and documentation used to prepare the declarations to be reviewed.

Ormazabal needed to develop EPDs for two products from the cgmcosmos family, adapting them to the new methodological requirements and ensuring their proper verification and registration. In addition, following the same approach, support was provided during the verification process for an additional EPD for a product from the same family.

Client profile

Ormazabal designs and manufactures solutions aimed at digitalising the electricity grid to integrate greater renewable energy generation, enable more sustainable mobility, and ensure electricity supply to buildings and infrastructure with critical energy needs.

Methodological approach and work process

The technical assistance combined a methodological review with the adaptation of the tools and documentation required to develop the new EPDs.

First, the changes introduced in the applicable versions of the PEP ecopassport rules —PCR-ed4-EN-2021 09 06 and PSR-0005-ed3.1-EN-2023 12 08— were analysed, identifying those affecting the scope, data, assumptions and calculation criteria of the Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs). As a complementary reference, the criteria established in IEC/TS 62271-320 Ed. 1.0:2025, concerning environmental aspects and LCA rules for high-voltage switchgear and controlgear, were also considered.

Based on this review, the corresponding LCA calculation tools were updated, incorporating the applicable methodological requirements and ensuring calculation traceability. Using the same data input, the tools developed can generate an environmental profile aligned with both PEP ecopassport and IEC requirements.

In the current project, the IEC criteria were applied only where they were compatible with the PEP ecopassport rules, which constituted the methodological reference framework for the declarations. In addition, the LCA reports and EPDs included results aligned with IEC as supplementary information.

Results and value generated

The project provides Ormazabal with a systematic calculation tool for Environmental Product Declarations, aligned with the criteria of PEP ecopassport and IEC/TS 62271-320, and supported by LCAs developed according to harmonised and verifiable methodological criteria.

Using this tool, the following have been generated:

  • One EPD for the cgmcosmos family.
  • One EPD for the cgm.zero family.

At Baisma, we supported the third-party audit process, facilitating verification in accordance with the specific criteria of IEC/TS 62271-320 and the PEP ecopassport rules. This process enables Ormazabal to communicate accurate and quantified environmental information about its products to customers and other interested stakeholders across its value chain.
